Choose your walking start, then plan the train, bus or car journey all the way there and back. Check seasonal services and allow time for the whole mountain day.
Choose your walking start
Scafell Pike is in the Lake District in Cumbria. Start by choosing your walking route: Wasdale is to the west, Borrowdale to the north and Great Langdale to the east. The roads do not circle the mountain, so changing valleys can mean a long road journey.
Our Wasdale and Lingmell guides start at Wasdale Head Green. Both Borrowdale and Corridor Route guides start at Seathwaite Farm in Borrowdale. The Great Langdale guide starts beside Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. Match your transport destination to that start, rather than choosing the station closest to the summit on a map.
Getting there without a car
A train takes you to the edge of the Lakes; you still need a bus, a walk or an arranged transfer to the start. Check both directions for your actual travel date using National Rail and the linked operator timetables. Allow time to change services, and check disruption and rail replacement buses before leaving.
Transport information checked 1 October 2026. The advertised Wasdale Explorer season has ended. Stagecoach's linked summer guide covers 23 March to 1 November 2026; check its current timetable for later dates.
| Walking start | Rail and bus connection | The final leg | Service limits and alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wasdale Head Green NY187085 Wasdale and Lingmell walks |
Ravenglass for Eskdale station, then the seasonal Wasdale Explorer when operating. | The Explorer's boarding point is the village car-park bus shelter west of the station. Use the Wasdale Head Green stop for these guides. The National Trust campsite road end is a different stop, beside Lake Head. | The dated 2026 Explorer season ran weekends and bank holidays, 2 May to 31 August. It has ended; no 2027 dates were confirmed at this check. When it does not run, confirm a taxi or lift both ways between your chosen station and the Green before travelling. Ravenglass or Seascale may suit an arranged transfer; ask the driver which station and times they can serve. |
| Seathwaite Farm, Borrowdale NY235122 Borrowdale and Corridor walks |
Penrith railway station, then X4/X5 to Keswick bus station; change to the 78 to Seatoller. See Stagecoach's Lakes guide and timetables. | From Seatoller, walk about 100 yards along the road to the Seathwaite turn, then about 2km along the lane to the farm. The bus does not reach Seathwaite. This adds about 4km to the return walk; allow time for it in both directions. | The checked summer 78 timetable runs daily, including public holidays; X4/X5 times differ on Sundays and public holidays. Check the 78 back to Keswick and your onward bus and train. For later seasons or a day that does not fit, confirm an alternative transfer or stay nearby; do not rely on finding a taxi after the walk. |
| Old Dungeon Ghyll, Great Langdale Beside the hotel Great Langdale walk |
Train to Windermere, reached via Oxenholme Lake District. Take a 555 or 599 to Ambleside, then the 516 from Kelsick Road to Dungeon Ghyll. Check Stagecoach's timetables for the connections; selected 516 journeys serve Windermere directly. | Alight at Dungeon Ghyll, Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. The walking start is beside the hotel and neighbouring National Trust car park. Stay on to this stop rather than getting off at New Dungeon Ghyll. | The checked summer 516 runs daily, with additional late journeys Friday and Saturday only. A late bus to Ambleside does not guarantee a train home. Check every onward connection and later-season changes. Arrange accommodation or a confirmed transfer if the whole journey does not fit. |
Wasdale: check more than the last bus
The 2026 Explorer timetable, now expired, shows why the whole return matters. Its final full journey left Wasdale Head Green at 19:00 and reached Ravenglass at 20:00; some other departures went only as far as Nether Wasdale. In the overlapping Northern timetable, the final Sunday rail or replacement-bus departures from Ravenglass were earlier than 20:00. Catching that last valley bus would not have completed the journey home.
Those are historical times, not a timetable for your next visit. The following season and its train connections need checking when announced. An overnight base or a confirmed transfer can make more sense than trying to fit a mountain day between unsuitable connections.
Plan your journey home
- Work backwards from home or your accommodation. Check the last useful train and the bus that reaches it, including transfer time. Use the timetable for the correct weekday, weekend or bank holiday.
- Allow for the whole walking day. Read the return-walk estimates for your route and add the approach from the bus stop, breaks and time for difficult ground, poor visibility or delays. The Seathwaite guides' 6–8 hours or longer exclude the extra lane walk from Seatoller. A timetable does not make a tight walking schedule realistic.
- Choose a return with room for delays. Check where it actually finishes. A bus to Nether Wasdale, Keswick or Ambleside is only part of the journey if you still need to reach a station.
- Save the details offline. Download or screenshot the current timetables, stops and booking confirmations before travelling. Reception can be poor in the valleys. Prepare offline navigation for the walk too.
- Confirm your alternative in advance. If using a taxi or lift, agree the exact pickup place, outward and return times, price and what happens if you are delayed. Confirm availability yourself; do not plan to summon one from the mountain. If the connections leave too little time, stay nearby, arrange different transport or choose a different walk.
Check mountain weather and your preparation before setting out. Leave time to descend in suitable conditions rather than rushing to catch transport.
Driving and parking
A postcode is an aid to reaching the area, not a precise trailhead. Check the named car park or farm against your route guide and map. The summit coordinates are not a driving destination. Follow local signs, keep access clear and check current parking arrangements on arrival.
- Wasdale Head Green — NY187085; area postcode CA20 1EX. This is the start of our Wasdale and Lingmell guides. Lake Head National Trust car park — NY182075, beside the National Trust campsite, is a different start further down the valley. Check the route's access notes and National Trust parking information; Lake Head's charges and facilities do not describe the Green.
- Seathwaite Farm, Borrowdale — NY235122; CA12 5XJ. Use the Seathwaite near Keswick, not the village of the same name in the Duddon valley. Follow the working farm's current public-parking information and arrival signs. Keep the lane clear for residents, tractors and emergency vehicles. Seatoller parking is separate and adds the lane walk described above.
- Old Dungeon Ghyll, Great Langdale — LA22 9JY. Use the National Trust car park beside Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel for our route, rather than the parking at New Dungeon Ghyll. Check the National Trust's Langdale parking information for current arrangements.
For another approach, confirm the named start with its route guide before choosing your destination. Bring drinking water, allow for limited mobile reception and check the signs for payment and restrictions rather than assuming another car park's facilities apply.
Toilets, food and drinking water
Sort out supplies and use valley facilities before the mountain walk. Carry the food and drinking water you need for the whole return, plus some spare food for a delay. The amount depends on the length of your route, conditions and your own needs; do not plan around an unconfirmed refill point or a pub being open when you return.
- Wasdale Head Green: the National Park lists public toilets at Wasdale Head. Wasdale Head Inn has food and drink options; check service times directly. Lake Head is separate: the National Trust lists temporary toilets at its Lake Head car park, not at the Green.
- Seathwaite Farm, Borrowdale: public toilets are listed at Seatoller car park, before the lane walk to the farm. The farm's toilet and shower facilities are described for campers; check with the operator before relying on access as a day walker. Bring food and water before reaching the walking start.
- Old Dungeon Ghyll, Great Langdale: the hotel's Climbers' Bar serves food, subject to its service times. The National Trust lists public toilets at Stickle Ghyll car park, further down the valley; these are not the Old Dungeon Ghyll walking start. Confirm any use of hotel facilities directly.
Facility locations and operator information were checked on . Listings do not guarantee that a toilet or food service is open on your day. See the equipment guide for packing and the BMC's food and water advice.
Staying near your walking start
An overnight base can give you an earlier start and avoid a tight same-day journey home. Choose accommodation in the valley you intend to walk from, then check the journey between the accommodation and the exact start. Ask about arrival times and any transfer you need before booking.
Browse places to stay, campsites, B&Bs and hotels. The National Trust Wasdale campsite is beside Lake Head, not Wasdale Head Green. A nearby address does not necessarily mean a short road journey to your chosen valley.
Arriving by air
If you fly, compare the complete onward journey to your walking start or accommodation. Check airport transport information for Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow or Prestwick, then check trains, buses or an arranged transfer. The best airport for your trip depends on those connections and arrival time, rather than distance from the summit. Allow an overnight stay if you cannot reach your base that day.
Transport sources and checked dates
The connections and access sources below were checked on 1 October 2026. Timetables, parking arrangements and disruption can change before your visit. These are travel-information checks, not a walked inspection of the mountain routes.
- Lake District National Park: Wasdale Explorer — stops and the expired 2026 season. Recheck for a newly announced season; do not carry the old dates into a future year.
- Stagecoach: Lakes guide and timetables — X4/X5, 78, 555/599 and 516. The linked guide at this check covers 23 March–1 November 2026. Check the replacement guide for journeys after that period and current service updates.
- National Rail journey planner and Northern timetables — rail connections and replacement services. Northern's checked Cumbrian Coast timetable covers 17 May–12 December 2026; the last useful connection depends on your day and destination.
- National Trust: Seatoller to Seathwaite approach — the approximately 2km lane walk. Its full trail is a different walk, not a Scafell Pike itinerary.
- National Trust: Old Dungeon Ghyll access — the named 516 stop and neighbouring car park. Its valley trail is separate from our Great Langdale mountain route.
- Lake District National Park: getting to and around the Lakes — wider official transport planning.
