Choose your walking start

Choose your Scafell Pike route before your campsite. A site in another valley may look close on a map but leave you with a substantial road journey. These are the starts used by our guides:

  • Wasdale Head Green: the Wasdale and Lingmell walks. Lake Head, beside the National Trust campsite, is a separate start.
  • Seathwaite Farm in Borrowdale: both the Borrowdale and Corridor Route guides. This is the Seathwaite near Keswick, rather than the village of the same name in the Duddon valley.
  • Old Dungeon Ghyll: our Great Langdale walk, starting beside the hotel and neighbouring National Trust car park.

Check the getting-there guide for exact starts and public-transport limits. Plan the journey from your campsite to the start and back; being in the right valley does not put every campsite at the trailhead.

National Trust Wasdale Campsite

Checked 		Beside Lake Head. For our Wasdale and Lingmell guides, reach Wasdale Head Green first and allow for that connection on your return. The Trust's Hollow Stones walk starts at Lake Head; it is a different starting itinerary. Tent pitches, with or without hook-up; hardstanding for campervans and motorhomes; pods and tipis. Narrow road access and a 6.5m vehicle limit. No caravans, roof tents or trailer tents; cars park away from tent pitches. The listed season is 27 December 2025–23 December 2026; closed 24–26 December. Book online before travelling. Minimum two nights, three on bank-holiday weekends. Ordinary groups are limited to four adults, including separate bookings. Nether Wasdale
Checked 		In Nether Wasdale, down the valley from Wasdale Head Green. Plan a separate road journey or confirmed transfer up the valley and back. Do not count this as staying at the walking start. See the operator's arrival directions. Tent pitches, electric hook-ups and hardstanding for campervans/motorhomes; pods, shepherd's huts and static caravans for hire. Static caravan hire does not establish permission for your touring caravan. Check your vehicle and awning requirements directly. Seasonal: the 2026 camping page gives 27 March–12 October, but the footer says 13 October; confirm the closing date. Pre-book hook-ups. Minimum three nights on bank-holiday weekends and two on weekend hook-up pitches. The vehicle gate closes 22:30–06:00; arrange an early departure before your walk. Read the pitch and booking rules.
National Trust Great Langdale Campsite
Great Langdale
Checked 		Between New and Old Dungeon Ghyll on the valley approach. Our guide starts beside Old Dungeon Ghyll, further up the valley. Use the operator's directions and your map to plan the connection both ways; the campsite entrance is not our route's start. Tent pitches without hook-up; campervan/motorhome pitches, including hardstanding with hook-up; pods. Vehicles up to 6.5m. No caravans or trailer tents. Roof tents need a large campervan pitch; cars park away from tent pitches. The listed season is 27 December 2025–31 December 2026; the guide describes year-round opening. Book online, including same-day arrivals. Minimum two nights, three on bank-holiday weekends; ordinary groups limited to four adults. Borrowdale: check Seathwaite Farm before booking

Seathwaite Farm Campsite is at the farm used as the start of our Borrowdale and Corridor Route guides. Its campsite information describes tents, roof tents, campervans, motorhomes and caravans, with no electric hook-ups. Access is along the narrow farm lane.

Current season dates need confirmation. At our check, the official website still labelled important information and prices “2025”, and its pages gave different reopening dates. We have therefore kept it separate from the comparison above. Use the operator's requested email booking enquiry to confirm opening dates, your vehicle or pitch, payment and arrival arrangements before travelling. No current price or availability is promised here.

Check these details before booking

  • Your exact walking start: check the route name and start on your map. Lake Head and Wasdale Head Green are different; Old and New Dungeon Ghyll are different places too.
  • Both journeys: allow for getting to the start and returning to camp. If you need a lift or taxi, confirm both directions in advance. For buses, use the current transport sources rather than assuming a seasonal service runs on your day.
  • Your pitch and vehicle: confirm tent size, hook-up, vehicle length, awning or roof-tent rules. A pitch for a motorhome does not necessarily accept a caravan. Choose the exact accommodation type in the operator's booking system.
  • Your dates and group: check the current season, minimum stay, group limits, arrival time, gate hours and checkout-day parking. Arrange late arrival or an early departure before setting off.
  • Pods and other ready-made accommodation: check what is supplied. A pod may replace your tent while still requiring sleeping bags, cooking equipment and your usual camping kit.
  • The walking day: check the mountain forecast, return-walk time and preparation guide. A campsite welcoming dogs does not establish that the summit walk suits your dog; read the dog-walking advice separately.
